The place

A four-bedroom, three-bathroom cottage at the southern tip of Lake Rosseau—known for its calm waters and boating culture. The place’s defining feature is its dramatic retrofuturist roof. The boathouse is attached and has two slips. Residents are only a short drive away from Port Carling’s restaurants, shopping, hiking trails, and golf courses.

The History

The bungalow was built in 1968 by the original owners. The current owners bought the property in 2022. They completed a full interior renovation while keeping the quirky roof and some of the original flagstone walls. As Quebecers, they aren’t able to visit the property as often as they would like, so they’ve decided to sell.

The tour

The entire compound spills over the shoreline—a feature no longer allowed for new builds in Muskoka.

Here’s the cottage from the front. Its angular cedar-shake roof—like something out of The Jetsons—canopies over the patio and front door.

The place's greatest feature might be its retrofuturist roof.

The foyer leads into the kitchen, which rises above the open-concept dining and living area.

The kitchen elevates above the dining area.

Its acacia counters are a great way to keep an eye on Brackenrig Bay.

This is the dining room, flanked on both sides by large transoms and sliding glass doors.

Two sets of sliding glass doors illuminate the space.

The wall-to-wall sliding windows and panoramic view are shown in reverse.

In the living area: an original wall of flagstone and a propane fireplace that is climate-friendly. Note the canoe that hangs above.

The propane fireplace is surrounded by the original flagstone wall.

Down the hall, you will find the main bedroom. This room is equipped with more flagstone and has an ensuite bathroom as well as a private balcony.

The main bedroom walks out to a private balcony.

The ensuite features heated floors, a rainfall shower and a soaker bath.

Note the Calcutta marble in the ensuite.

There’s also a double vanity, along with a second walkout to the balcony.

The ensuite also accesses the balcony.

Here’s a peek inside one of the secondary bedrooms. This one looks over the front yard.

The secondary bedroom faces the front of the home.

The boathouse with two slips is next. It has a large deck and a 1,500-square foot terrace.

The boathouse stands above five-foot-deep water.

The terrace is nothing but sky. It faces west to enjoy sunset views.

The boathouse terrace is ideal for parties.

The covered lounge is a place of serenity.

Lastly, the private beach is just off the side.

This secluded beach lies just right of the main entrance.
