Express Entry
IRCC uses a system called Express Entry to collectively manage economic immigration applications submitted to the following three programs
Since June 2023, IRCC has used three types of Express Entry draws to welcome new foreign nationals to Canada. These draw types are:
Below, we will explain the differences between these two types of draws.
Draws for General and Program-specific express entry
General and program-specific Express Entry draws prioritize immigration candidates based primarily on their CRS scores.
Note: CRS scores are numeric values assigned to every eligible Express Entry candidate based on different human capital factors such as age, work experience, and official language proficiency.
The following steps are for candidates who want to receive an ITA via either of these draw types.
- Confirm your eligibility for at least one Express Entry-managed program (FSWP, FSTP or CEC)
- Create an IRCC profile online and receive your CRS score
- Wait until IRCC conducts its next Express Entry draw to see whether you will be given an ITA
- ITAs are only issued to candidates who have a CRS score above the department’s cut-off score for a particular draw
Note: Receiving an ITA is the only way that an Express Entry candidate will be permitted to submit an electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR) to IRCC.

Category-BasedInstant Entry Draws
Beginning in June last year, IRCC began conducting category-based Express Entry draws, specifically intending to attract Canadian immigration candidates with specific work experience and proficiencies. Through category-based draws, IRCC has focused on candidates who the department believes can best address Canada’s most important labour market gaps and national demographic needs. All immigration candidates who receive an ITA during a category-based draw fit into one of the following six target categories.
They have experience in:
- Healthcare
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
- Trades
- Transport
- Agriculture and Agrifood
They have:
- Strong French language ability
Note: Earlier this year, IRCC already confirmed that it would continue with the same six original target categories (listed above).
