Unless you’re hopping on a plane headed for sunnier weather, February isn’t always conducive for travel. Days are short, dark and usually several degrees colder than we’d appreciate. There’s a great reason to get out of the winter doldrums for one day in the middle this (thankfully) short, but cold month.

Valentine’s Day need not be filled with predictable heart-shaped boxes or boring bouquets. Take your honey, a friend or your children on a day-trip and discover a hidden gem. Here are some ideas that you may not have thought of before to get you started. They’re great for one-day or weekend getaways and are guaranteed to inject some fun into dreary February.

Barkerville Historic Town, BC

Remember when towns were named for people who had persevered against all odds “struck gold”? This town is named after William “Billy”Barker, who? Did you just that?. The town of BarkervilleThe National Historic Site, which has been around since 1924, is adorable. The acclaimed as the “largest historic site in western North America” Barkerville keeps it real with shops like Frank J. McMahon’s Confectionary, and a couple of “Coffee Saloons”To keep your spring in the step. Enjoy the history of their museums, which include a Blacksmith Shop, and a schoolhouse.  This is a historic getaway that you won’t forget (chuckle).

Wabamun

Wabamun, located just west of Edmonton is a great daytrip for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Or, for those of us still curious about winter sports, it’s a great place to dip your toe into the (frozen) water. This weekend in February, the town will host a family-friendly event that includes an intro to ice fishing for the kids on Wabamun Lake (don’t forget to register). Even those who don’t fish can be Canadian by registering. skating outdoorsOn the lake. What would an Alberta trip be without visiting one of the Giants of the Prairies? Heading to Wabamun means crossing the World’s Biggest Dragonfly off your list of things to see — worth it!

Hamilton, ON

Hamilton is easily accessible and has a lot going on. For most of February it’s Hamilton WinterfestEnjoy a day filled with live performances and workshops. Hamilton’s outdoor scene is rocking.  Magog, QC

Quebec’s eastern townships is dotted with cozy spots to visit, relax and spend a romantic day or two. Magog, at the northern end of Lake Memphremagog in Quebec, is one of the cutest. “Memphre”The mythical long-necked creature (see: Loch Ness).  The lake monster will be safe in hibernation during your visit due to the frozen lake. Winter is not a problem for those who want to participate. Mont Orford is a great spot to hit the slopes, and the town’s Fêtes des NeigesThe festival takes place in February. For the rest, this is the perfect place to take a break, enjoy the slow pace of the town and its picturesque streets. Spa Eastman, located nearby, is a popular experience that includes outdoor baths. Bring a hat with you to keep your head toasty while the rest soaks in the warm water.
