In the department’s second Express Entry draw this week, IRCC issued 1,500 Invitations to apply(ITAs) for candidates with strong French language proficiency in a category-based drawing. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking SystemAll Express Entry candidates who received ITAs during this round of invitations had a CRS score of 388.
Today’s invitations follow a general Express Entry drawing on March 25, 2020, when IRCC sent 1,980 ITAs out to candidates with a minimum score of CRS of 524.
Note: CanadaVisa will update this developing story should IRCC conduct more Express Entry draws this week.
Express Entry
Express Entry is the federal government’s application management system. This system jointly manages Canadian immigration applications made to the following three economic-class permanent residence (PR) programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program(FSWP) Federal Skilled Trades Program(FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
Note: IRCC now conducts three types of Express Entry draws: general draws, program-specific draws, and Draws based upon categories. Below, we will outline the differences between these draws.
General and program-specific express entry draws
Since the introduction of Express Entry in 2015, IRCC has been conducting general and program specific draws. These draws are primarily focused on welcoming the eligible immigration candidates with the highest CRS scores.
CRS scores are assigned to all eligible candidates once they enter the Express Entry candidate pool. This can only happen after the candidate confirms their eligibility for any of the Express Entry programs, and creates an IRCC online profile.
Note: CRS scores are determined using pre-established values given to various human capital factors (a candidate’s age, education and work experience acquired in Canada, for example).
The candidates must wait until the Immigration Department of Canada issues its next round invitations after they receive their CRS score. Then, they will know if they have met the requirements to receive an ITA. As an Express Entry candidate, you can only apply for Canadian PR by submitting an ITA.
Note: IRCC will only issue an ITA to candidates who have a CRS above the cut-off score for a particular draw.
Category-BasedInstant Entry Draws
IRCC conducted its first category-based draw on June 28, 2023.
These draws were introduced as a way for the federal government to attract foreign skilled workers with specific in-demand work experience and proficiencies relevant to the most pressing needs of Canada’s labour market and demographic landscape.
IRCC selected the six categories listed below as priority categories for category-based express entry draws. These categories were chosen based on Canada’s labour market and demographic gaps. Since the inception of category-based Express Entry draws, IRCC has given priority to candidates with the following characteristics.
Note: Last month, the IRCC confirmed that it would be implementing its plan. Continue with the same categories of Express Entry for 2024.

- Work experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
- Work experience in Trades
