Amex Canada has announced a change to the welcome bonus offer for the Aeroplan Reserve and Aeroplan Reserve Business Cards.

Let’s take a look at the details:

Aeroplan Reserve Card Welcome Bonus Update

The Aeroplan Reserve Card now offers a welcome bonus. Aeroplan points are now 85,000, a reduction from the previous 90,000.

Earning the welcome bonus is easier now that the welcome bonus has fallen by 5k.

New American Express Aeroplan Reserve cardmembers can earn up 85,000 Aeroplan points.

• Spend $7,500 within the first 3 months on your Card and earn 60,000 Aeroplan points.
• Plus, earn an extra 25,000 Aeroplan points if you spend $2,500 during the month of 13.

 

 

This welcome bonus is an improvement. It allows you to earn more points in the first three months rather than over a longer period of time.

The previous offer stretched out the welcome bonus by requiring you to spend $2,000 every month for 6 months, apply two supplementary cards, and earn most of the points at the anniversary of the Card. There are too many hoops for the welcome bonus.

Redeem Aeroplan points for a free hotel night

Aeroplan cardmembers can now receive an extra night for every three consecutive hotel nights purchased using Aeroplan points. This offer expires December 31, 2024.

Aeroplan Business Reserve Card Welcome Update

Aeroplan Business Reserve Card now offers a welcome bonus 90,000 Aeroplan Points, down from its previous offer of 95,000.

Here’s how it works:

Earn up to 90 000 Welcome Bonus Aeroplan Points:

• Spend $10,500 within the first 3 months on your Card and earn 65,000 Aeroplan points.
• Plus, earn an additional 25,000 Aeroplan points when you spend $3,500 in purchases in month 13.

Like the personal Reserve card, this welcome bonus allows you to earn points and redeem them faster.

Although this offer is an improvement, I think it’s safe to say we all wish the welcome bonus offer on the month 13 card anniversary would go away entirely. I don’t like the fact this is marketed as a welcome bonus offer. It’s misleading, as you will have to pay the annual fee, and meet another minimum spend requirement to earn those extra 25,000 points, so keep that in mind.

The Business Reserve Card is also entitled to an additional free night when booking three consecutive hotel nights using your Aeroplan Points.

What do you think about the new Aeroplan Reserve Cards welcome bonus offers? Although both cards saw a 5k point drop, the structure of this offer allows you to redeem your points faster, rather than spread them out.
