What is Express Entry (E-ZPass)?
Express Entry is an application management system that oversees three of Canada’s most prominent economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program(FSWP), Canadian Experience Class(CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
Each of these programmes uses the Comprehensive Ranking System to evaluate candidates on human capital factors like their age, language ability and occupation. The system also considers whether a spouse or partner is included in an application.
Each factor is worth a certain number of points and when added together, these points comprise a candidate’s overall CRS score. After receiving a CRS Score, the candidate is ranked against all other Express Entry candidates. Those with the highest scores will be the most likely recipients of an invitation to apply for permanent residence in an upcoming Express Entry Draw.
All three programs have different criteria for eligibility, but they all use the same system.
After receiving an ITA, a candidate has 60 days to submit IRCC their final application.
What is category based selection?
Category-based selection is introduced in May 2023 as a means for IRCC to select Express Entry candidates with attributes that will have the most positive impact and Canada’s labour force and economy.
The six categories include five occupation-based categories and one category that targets candidates who have a strong knowledge of French. The occupation categories are as follows:
- Healthcare occupations
- STEM (Science, technology, Engineering, Mathematics) careers
- Trade occupations like carpenters, plumbers and contractors
- Transport occupations
- Agriculture and agrifood occupations
According to a recent Access to Information Request (AIP), theThe French proficiency category will have the highest number of candidates selected this year. (30%). The remaining categories will have a maximum of 5%.
