Introduction
American Express Canada has a referral programme for its Cardmembers. This allows them to refer their friends and family members for a Card and both get rewarded.
If you’re applying for your first Amex Cobalt Card you can earn a welcome bonus by using an existing cardmembers referral link.
And if you’re an existing Cobalt Cardmember, you can share your referral link with friends and family and when they get approved, you will earn referral points.
Let’s take a look at how it works.
Limited Time Deal! Refer a friend to earn a bonus up to 75,000 points per year.
Your friend must apply between January 17, 2020 and March 4, 2020 to qualify for the Card.

New Cobalt Cardmember Benefits
In their first year of use, your friend can earn 1,250 points for every monthly billing period where they spend $750. This could total up to 15,000 points per year.
This offer is the same for the Cobalt Card as it was when it was first introduced.
Key Referral Terms
- Maximum annual referral bonus of 75,000 Membership Rewards points is allowed per calendar year. (5,000 points x 15 referrers.)
- Referral bonuses will be determined by your creditworthiness with American Express and your account history.
- Allow up to eight to ten weeks for your referral bonus to be posted to your account. (Points usually post much faster, usually within a few days or a week).
Important Considerations
- You can only earn referrals points if a new Cardmember joins the American Express Cobalt Card. Cardmembers who are currently or previously cardmembers will not be eligible.
- American Express reserves the rights to limit, cancel, revoke, or revoke any referrals or welcome bonus for violations of the terms.

How to maximize your referral bonus points
American Express may periodically increase the referral bonuses. That’s when it really pays to share your referral link!
Amex's referral bonus is sometimes higher than the standard welcome bonus, but may also require a greater minimum spend.
Logging into your American Express Online account and checking out your current offers will help you to find out if there are any special deals.
Some travel bloggers will post their referral link on their blog or on forums such as Reddit or Facebook.
You might be questioning whether Amex enforces restrictions on this practice, considering that you’re ideally expected to share your referral link solely with family and friends. The truth is, a lot of bloggers share their referral links with their readers, and that’s how they earn more points to continue traveling and blogging.
Amex’s guidelines for sharing your referral link are pretty vague:
- You should only share your link with friends and family members who are genuinely interested in receiving it.
- Ask for their permission before you proceed.

As long as you aren’t spamming people with your link, and take a reasonable approach to sharing your link, you should be ok.
In my personal experience, Amex doesn’t seem to mind that travel bloggers share their referral links.
You would be surprised how many people clicked on the referral links I shared when I first started PointsWise!
It was exciting to watch my points balance increase quickly. In a few weeks, I'd refer the maximum amount of people. Then I'd sign up for a second Card and repeat the entire process!
It was really free to travel and write about your experiences.
If you’re looking to travel for free on credit Card points, the secret is to refer other people to sign up for an Amex Card.
