Immigration to Increase Canada’s Population by 21 Million – ASKMigration: Canadian Lifestyle Magazine

After considering Canada’s evolving demographic landscape, Statistics Canada has forecast that by 2073, Canada could be home to over 63 million people according to their medium-growth scenario. These projections indicate that between 47.1 million and 87.2 millions people could live in Canada in the coming 50 years. These projections, however, are not predictions.

Although fertility has reached an all-time high in 2022 and Canada’s life expectancy has decreased in three years, population increase is due to the large number of permanent and short-term immigrants who have entered the country.

How Canada’s Population Will Grow

In the next 25-year period, some provinces such as Ontario and Quebec will be the most populous, while other territories such as Newfoundland & Labrador are likely to have a decreased population growth. Overall, Canada’s population should experience a net population increase in the next 50 years.

The increase of immigrants is evident. Recently, the country’s total population surpassed the 41 million mark, from the 40 million recorded less than a year before. We can also continue expecting international migration to play a crucial role in Canada’s population growth while natural growth has a marginal role.

Immigrants are made up of workers, asylum seekers, and students.

According to the figures, Canada’s population would increase as follows:

• Children aged 0 – 14 years:All projections show a steady decrease in the population, from a peak of 34 % in 1962 to an estimated 15,4 % in 2023.
• Ages 65 years and olderIncrease from 18.9% to between 21.9% to 32.3% by 2073.
• Ages 85 years old and olderRapid population growth, especially between 2031-2050.
