In IRCC’s second Express Entry draw in as many days, the department has issued 3,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) today. Today’s program-specific draw saw the department issue ITAs to candidates with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking SystemScore of 522 on the CRS.

This draw follows another program-specific draw yesterday (May 30, 2024), which saw IRCC issue 2,985 ITAs to Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates with a minimum CRS score of 676.

Express Entry

Express Entry is the name given to IRCC’s application management system for the following three economic-class immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program(FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program(FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

As of June 2023, IRCC now conducts three types of Express Entry draws: general, program-specific, and category-based

Draws for all Programs and General Draws

These two Express Entry draw types are known for simply prioritizing eligible candidates based on who has the highest CRS score.

CRS scores are the values that IRCC assigns to Express-Entry eligible candidates, which are based on a variety of human capital factors. These factors include such things as age, education, and work experience.

Once an individual confirms their eligibility for at least one of the three Express Entry-managed programs, the candidate can create an online IRCC profile and receive their CRS score.

At this time, candidates for general and program-specific draws must wait for the department to conduct its next Express Entry draw. This is when the candidate will see whether they will receive an ITA.

It is important to note that successful ITA recipients during any Express Entry draw are only those whose CRS score is above the department’s cut-off (assigned uniquely for each draw).

Note: IRCC only accepts electronic Applications for Permanent Residence (eAPRs), which are submitted by Express Entry candidates.

Category-Based draws

First conducted in June 2023, category-based draws were implemented to provide IRCC with a way to specifically attract Canadian immigration candidates based on Canada’s most pressing labour market gaps and demographic needs. In other words, these draws target candidates with specific work experience and proficiencies, allowing the department to better focus on people they deem to have “in-demand” attributes.

Before beginning to conduct category-based draws last year, IRCC decided that people with the following attributes would be the focus of category-based draws:

  • Work experience in Healthcare
  • Work experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Work experience in Trades
  • Experience in Transport
  • Work experience in Agriculture and Agri-Food
  • Strong French language proficiency (minimum score of 7 in all 4 language abilities on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens” (NCLC)

Note: IRCC has confirmed that the department will continue to use the focus categories for the same type of Express entry draw for 2024.
