Lafarge Canada has lent its technical expertise in choosing the right materials for a landmark condominium development in an underdeveloped region of Oakville that could set the bar for what could become one of the GTA’s most sustainable neighbourhoods.
Fernbrook Homes and Crystal Homes developed NUVO Condos – an eight-storey mid-rise with 487 units. The expertise is what matters. Lafarge CanadaThrough a program called ECOPact Standard, developers are provided with assistance in selecting the most environmentally friendly materials available worldwide.
ECOPact Standard concrete mixes reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90 percent compared to conventional concrete. It is also seen as a crucial component in meeting ambitious net zero targets.
That’s why NUVO upped the ante by using Lafarge’s Weathermix Cold Weather Concrete, which is perfectly suited for Canada’s four seasons by acclimating to temperature through accelerated performance in the dead of winter, and deceleration during hot, humid summers.
NUVO also used Chronolia, a high-early strength concrete, which is known for its exceptional bonding properties.
NUVO is only the first of many. The rare GTA neighbourhood that is undeveloped., but it’s sustainable composition a kind-of prototype intended to guide future developments in your neighbourhood on how to follow.
“This project exemplifies our commitment to sustainability, showcasing how integrating ECOPact can create tangible reductions in CO2 emissions while meeting the high standards of our partners,” said John McCabe, VPMG of Concrete/RMXSpecialist for Lafarge Canada East.
The ECOPact Standard was a huge success at NUVO CondosEliminating approximately 1,750 tons CO2 emissions.
With the increasingly punitive carbon tax, which rose to $65 per metric ton in April—and which is slated to swell to $170 per metric ton by 2030—the developers conducted meticulous due diligence when selecting a materials provider to help them realize their ambition of building a truly sustainable community, and one that’s future-proofed.
“Working with Lafarge on this project has been a game changer,”Kathy Di Silvetro is the President of Crystal Homes. “Their commitment to sustainability aligns with our vision for responsible construction, and this successful partnership sets a new standard for future projects.”
Lafarge carefully selects all of its building partners to ensure that their commitment to sustainability is reflected in the final products.
Jerry Bettencourt, VAP Specialist Lafarge Canada East, says that isn’t just healthier for the environment, it improves the wellbeing of residents, too.
“The strategic use of ECOPact, and the collaboration among various teams, underscores our dedication to driving sustainable solutions in construction,”He said.
