Express Entry

Express Entry is the name given to the system used by Canada’s immigration department to handle applications for three economic programs – the Federal Skilled Worker Program(FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program(FSTP) and the CEC

As of June 2023, IRCC issues ITAs through three different types of Express Entry draws: General, Program-specific and Category-based.

Draws for General and Program-specific express entry

Express Entry draws, both general and program-specific, prioritize immigration candidates based upon their CRS score.

Note: CRS scores represent the numerical values that IRCC assigns to each eligible Express Entry applicant. These values are used to rank candidates based upon a variety factors. CRS scores are determined by a number of factors, including a candidate’s age, education and ability to speak either or both official languages of Canada.

As outlined in the following, candidates who are eligible to participate in IRCC’s program-specific or general draws will go through three general steps.

  1. Confirming your eligibility for at least one of IRCC’s three Express Entry-managed programs
  2. If deemed eligible, creating an online profile with IRCC*
  3. Waiting for the next Express Entry draw from IRCC

*It is at this time, during step two, that eligible Express Entry candidates will receive their CRS score

Note: To be able to receive an ITA, a candidate’s individual CRS score must be greater than the department’s cut-off for a given Express Entry draw. Without this invitation, no Express Entry candidate will be permitted to submit an electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR) to IRCC.

Category-BasedDraws for Express Entry

First introduced in May 2023, category-based draws are a new way for IRCC to bring in immigration candidates who can address Canada’s most pressing labour market and demographic needs using specific types of work experience and proficiencies.

Note: The IRCC held its first category-based drawing on June 28, 2023.

For this year, IRCC has chosen to target immigration candidates who possess the following attributes:

  • Healthcare work experience
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) work experience
  • Trades industry work experience
  • Transport industry work experience
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food industry work experience
  • Strong French language skills
