Safety First: How to create the perfect home emergency kit

Here are some essential supplies, practical tips and expert insights that will help you create a reliable safety net in case of an unforeseen event.

Assess Your Needs

Consider the types and frequency of emergencies that may occur in your locality. This could include natural disasters, such as earthquakes or hurricanes, or manmade emergencies, such as power outages and chemical spills. Then, adjust and tailor your kit accordingly. 

Tools and Supplies 

Gather basic tools to use in the event that you need to perform emergency repairs. Included in this list are a multi-tool and pliers. Consider grabbing some duct-tape, and a utility knife, if needed. You can’t be too prepared. 

Food and Water 

It is important to have enough water and food in an emergency. Choose nonperishable food that requires little or no preparation such as canned goods and dried fruits, nuts and protein bars. Stockpile water for drinking and sanitation. Aim to have one gallon per person, per day. 

First Aid Kit

Safety comes first. Prepare a comprehensive first-aid kit that includes bandages and gauze pads, adhesive strips, antiseptic wipes (wipes), scissors, tweezers and pain relievers. Also include any prescription medications. 

Lighting and Communication

In case of emergency, make sure you have all your flashlights, radios and walkie-talkies. You should also keep portable chargers in your home, because you never know if and when you will need them.
