A new year is a great time to jumpstart your family’s health and wellbeing by creating and building healthy habits. While New Year’s resolutions are easy to make but easier to break, investing in developing healthy habits through repetition, which can be easily incorporated into your lifestyle will help you sustain them.

Start at a young age
Healthy habits are more likely to be formed in children who are younger. Remember that both unhealthy and healthy habits are hard to break. Early-life development of good habits can increase their chances of retaining them into adulthood.  It is best to start developing healthy habits in younger children, but it is never too late for older children to learn them.

Get the whole family involved
Invite your children to be involved. Ask older children to evaluate and consider some healthy habits the whole family can work together on. Discuss with your children the benefits and reasons behind the habits, and then come up a strategy to improve them.

Be patient, persistent and tolerant
Be aware that establishing habits requires a lot of time, effort and consistency.  Be aware that progress can be slow. Be prepared to face frustration, resistance and pushback.  Be persistent and patient. Re-evaluate your goals and restart the entire process.  It can be difficult at times, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Motivation
It can be tempting for people to give up on good habits, as the results might not be immediately apparent.  You can counter the lack of progress by boosting your self-confidence, offering support and cheering on each other. Track your child’s progress, thank them for their efforts, and remind them about the long-term rewards. Celebrate small victories.

Be a good example
Children learn best when they are surrounded by important people. Parents and caregivers are the most important models for most children. It means that children are more likely develop good habits if they see their parents developing good habits. This means acting in the manner you would like your children to follow.

Positive habits are the focus
Focus on developing new healthy habits in order to counteract negative habits. Instead of avoiding junk food, you can create habits that encourage you to eat more fruits and vegetables. By focusing your attention on the positive, you are less likely to revert to the bad behaviours and increase the likelihood that the positive habit will stick.

Start with small, achievable habits
Start small and add healthy habits as needed.  Keep in mind your children’s development and maturity level when helping them develop good habits. For younger children, it may be necessary to start off with habits that are easier and more achievable.

It is clear that helping children develop healthy habits will be beneficial to their overall wellbeing.  The benefits are worth the time and effort.  Let’s start the new year strong with healthy habits.
