Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada sent shockwaves throughout the international student population by announcing a limit on student visas. Only 360,000 study permit will be issued in 2024. This reduction of 35% in student visa approvals could continue through 2025.

This drastic slashing of applications, as well as the elimination of work permit for undergraduate students, and their spouses, makes Canadian citizenship a dream that is out of reach for many. Students acquiring a master’s degree can renew their current work permit, but it expires in three years, making it a challenge to find the work placements necessary to achieve completion.

Many spouses of students won’t receive temporary work permits, leaving them without financial support. The IRCC has doubled the cost of living requirements for international students, from $10,000 to $20.635 by December 2024.

Why did the Canadian government limit student visas?

According to the official IRRC report, Canada lacks the housing, curriculum, and other support systems necessary to support foreign students currently in the country. The government blames “bad actors”The university system has abused the student visa system to increase revenue.

According to a CTV broadcast featuring IRRC Minister Paul Miller certain institutions have lied students by promising non-existent curricula. Those who seek citizenship without the intention of studying have also abused this system to an extent that it is unsustainable.

Caps are different in each province or territory

The location of your chosen study will determine whether you are approved for a 2024 visa. Currently, there are 1,000 designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Of these, 529 are in Ontario. In urban centers, the number of foreign students is so high that it leads to poverty, vagrancy, and abandoned studies.

Each province will be responsible for approving student visas to ensure that there are no full classes. For a province to consider a student’s application, they must attach a letter of attestation and provide proof they can pay for the cost of living.
