Such Varied Wildlife Adventures In Zambia

We were thrilled about our wonderful wildlife adventures in Zambia.  We were excited about all our great wildlife adventures in Zambia. Thorntree River LodgeIt was a relaxing, luxurious holiday.  We didn’t miss any opportunities to be close to the animals.

This great African journey was planned to experience the African Big Five animals – elephants, rhinos, buffalo, lions and leopards.  We were disappointed to find no big cats in any of the game parks near our safari lodge.  We never saw buffalos during our day trips.  We were happy to see elephants, rhinos and other wildlife.  

We had a great time on each day trip. Our amazing African adventure.  And other fun too!

Seeing Wildlife In Zambia

We met our private tour guide Nevi as we crossed the border to Zambia and headed towards the Thorntree River Lodge.  He was an excellent guide for the 3 days we spent in Zambia.

On our next Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge offers game drivesThere was no tracker in the jeep that carried Nevi.  We were all looking for signs of activity in the trees.  He introduced the concept of “ALT”You can also find out more about “Animal Like Things”.  Not all animals that looked wild were alive. 

Nevi would stop the jeep when he saw animal prints on the ground.  We didn’t know how he saw the tracks as we traveled.

There were several options for day trips to the in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National ParkThe following are some of the most effective ways to improve your own effectiveness. We chose a game drive in the evening that allowed us to get up close with white rhinos.  The view was incredible. We did a morning game drive on another occasion and were able to see the early risers.  It was amazing to see elephants and giraffes.  Also monkeys.  We saw antelopes and warthogs fleeing when they heard the jeep.

We took boat cruises down the Zambezi River at sunrise and sunset.  It was an excellent way to get close to the hippos. We even saw two crocodiles.

There are many wildlife adventures to be had in Zambia.

Seeing Wildlife In Zambia

We got to see our first elephants as they walked through the resort.  It was a great way to start the trip. Stay at the Thorntree River Lodge.

The second time we saw elephants, although not as close as the first, was just as fascinating.  As the sun set on the Zambezi River, we saw elephants along the far bank of the river.  They were beautiful as they glowed in the sunset light.

On our first afternoon drive, we came across a family elephants drinking from the waterhole.  We were fascinated watching them drink from their trunks.  We were thrilled when our zoom lens revealed that the youngster had it all figured out.

On our early morning drive, we noticed movement in the forest beside our jeep.  We were rewarded for our early morning game drive with a close up view of an Elephant.

We saw a lot of elephants on Our first trip to Africa.  We never tire of discovering more elephant wildlife adventures.  

White Rhinos up close and personal

One of the special day trips on Our stay at the Safari Resort in ZambiaIt was a walk among the rhinos.  We went to the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National ParkWe began our search for rhinos.  This excursion involved a ranger who was trained and had a gun.  Nevi received instructions on where to find the ranger.  We stayed in our jeep after parking it, but we could see rhinos far away by the watering holes.

After our ranger had joined us, he gave us instructions to leave the jeep and get a better view of the hippos as they moved away from their watering hole.  We were instructed to walk in single file, and to avoid loud or quick movements.  He led us into the trees, and then positioned us at a safe distance from where the Rhinos had stopped.

We felt safe and secure during this stop.  Three other groups were positioned near us.  The viewing time was just 10 minutes.  We were happy to have this opportunity on our wildlife adventure in Zambia.

We Saw Hippos All Day Long

On a prior visit to the Aquila Game Reserve is located in Cape TownWe saw hippos playing in shallow mud holes.

You can also find out more about this by clicking here. Stay at the Thorntree River LodgeWas right on the Zambezi River. We heard hippos barking all day in the water, just off our lodge. We could only see their heads through a zoom lens. We were warned the hippos would often emerge from the water in the area around our resort when darkness fell. But we never saw a hippos emerge from the water in Zambia.

When we took a Cruise on the Zambezi RiverWe got to see the hippos up close at sunset and again at sunrise. We saw their ears wiggle and sometimes they spewed water. Once we caught a distant hippo yawning.

It was awesome to see that there were hippos all over the place. We would have loved to have seen more than just hippo head. The wildlife adventures in Zambia were interesting but disappointing.

We received our first giraffe snack on our Stay at the Thorntree River LodgeBefore we checked in. Our guide Nevi instructed us to keep an eye out for animals as we drove along the long driveway. He stopped us and told us to look for a giraffe in the trees. We wondered if the inflated giraffe was inflated in advance by radio. Zooming in, we saw that it was our first giraffe.

On our early morning drive, we were surprised by a giraffe that crossed the road in front the jeep. We observed the unique gait. The legs moved in one direction, then in the opposite direction. After stopping on the road to look at us, the giraffe continued up the trees.

We watched as the giraffe attacked the treetops. We learned that the giraffe used their long tongues in order to remove leaves surrounded with thorns. With the zoom lens, we captured this amazing sight!

We were just as happy to see a giraffe cross the road when we saw a group of Zebra crossing in another area of the park. We stopped the jeep to watch the group (a “dazzle”) move in single file. They stopped in a nearby field and we were able to get a close-up view of the zebras.

Zebras are always entertaining to watch. We learned that zebras are actually black and white with stripes. The black and white colour helps regulate temperature. Every game drive is an eduction.

On our wildlife adventure in Zambia, we were always happy to see giraffes & zebras.

Fast Running Antelope

As we drove by large open fields we often saw groups of impalas in the distance. As we approached, they scattered. We found a group of young ones by the river on our afternoon game drive. But they also loped away as soon as we stopped the jeep.

We are not like other websites Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge offers game drivesWe did not find many antelope species during our visit to Zambia. We got our first glimpse of the eland and its spiral horns.

On our wildlife safaris in Zambia, it was always a thrill to see the fast-running antelope.

Monkeys can be found everywhere

You can also find out more about We arrived at the Thorntree River LodgeWe were warned that monkeys were everywhere in the resort. We had the same experience when We stayed in the Iguazu fallsIn Argentina. The baboons roamed the entire property. We saw them lope regularly through our yard, and into the trees near the Zambezi River. The paths leading to our suite were often swarming with monkeys of all sizes that climbed everything.

On our game drives, baboons were less visible because they scurried from the jeep. We could see them from a distance. We even saw a vervet with its baby one time.

Monkeys were an everyday sight on our safaris in Zambia.

Game Drives Offer Special Experiences

On our morning drive, we stopped by the Old Drift Cemetery.  Nevi told a few stories about the early European settlers.  This cemetery was the final resting place of many of those settlers.

We learned about African tradition “Sundowner”The following are some of the most effective ways to improve your own effectiveness. our game drive excursionsWhen we took the Rovos RailTrain from Pretoria to Victoria Falls.  On our Safari in ZambiaWe enjoyed a Sundowner on a boat trip down the Zambezi River as the sun was setting. On our evening game drive, we had our second Sundowner in Zambia.  Nevi also brought some treats on our early morning drive as we watched sun rise.

We enjoyed all the wonderful animal adventures we had in Zambia. We also enjoyed the other experiences we had.
