You can keep your home cool without air conditioning.

While the warm weather is enjoyable outside, it’s less fun when inside the house is as warm as outside. If you don’t have A/C, here’s a guide on keeping your home cool with some DIYs and easy tips. 

1. Close the Window Coverings

Close the blinds and curtains during daylight hours to block as much sunlight as possible. The sunlight is beautiful but it also heats up the house through the windows. This is a great way to cool your house.

2. Add Window Film 

Install heat-controlling window film if you want to keep your blinds and curtains open.  This allows the sun to enter your home (natural light – yeehaw!)The reflective surfaces also reflect a great deal of heat. It also adds  an additional layer of insulation throughout the winter.

3. Exhaust the Heat 

Use exhaust fans to dissipate the heat generated by your shower or kitchen appliances. You can use them with open windows at night to remove hot air and bring in cool air.

4. Fans: Make the Most of Them

You can turn fans into air conditioners by DIYing them. Place a damp, cold sheet in front of it, a bowl full of ice behind the fan, or attach ziploc bags or frozen water bottles to the back. This will cool the air that the fan blows more than it would by itself. 

5. Dehumidify 

It can create a heat wave that is oppressive and stifle the air inside. It may also prevent sweat from evaporating and thus inhibit your body’s temperature regulation. Bring in a dehumidifier that can help to remove excess moisture.

6. Reduce Your Appliance Usage 

Avoid cooking on the stove or oven. While small appliances, such as phone chargers, can cause heat to build up in your home, it is likely that washers dryers and dishwashers will be the most problematic. Turn off everything that isn’t required, or better yet, unplug it.
