Can International Students Work in Canada

Understanding Work Hour Policies

You should first learn about the work-hour policy of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. These rules can vary depending on the season.

During summer, which is typically considered a “scheduled break”Students from other countries can work up to 40 or more hours per week during the academic year. Once the academic year resumes you can work up 20 hours per week. This limit will be increased to 24 hours per a week in the fall.

This update replaces the temporary policy that allowed students working more than 20 hours a week during class time, which ended April 30, 2024.

• Your study permit should include a work authorization.
• Be enrolled full-time at an institution eligible
• Have a social insurance number (SIN).

For off-campus work

• Be registered in a qualifying study program that’s at least six months program resulting in a degree, diploma, or certificate
• You have started your studies
• Have a SIN
