We enjoyed our South America visit on a cruise to Antarctica
We were glad we added time to our cruise to Antarctica for some wonderful South America visits. Our trip to Antarctica began and ended in Santiago, Chile. After the cruise, we flew to Argentina. explored Buenos Aires. And even went to Iguazu Falls, for a few nights. Some great additions to a amazing Antarctica cruise to remember.
Our First Visit to South America

We cruised out of Miami, up the Amazon River, and along the coast in Brazil. We then traveled south, stopping in Buenos Aires, Punta Del Este, and Montevideo in Uruguay.

We flew to Buenos Aires after returning to Santiago from our Antarctica Cruise. We had a lot of things to do in the area around our hotel.

We really wanted to visit Iguazu falls on our first trip to South America but it was not possible to schedule. When we planned our South America trips on a cruise from Antarctica, we knew that we wanted to see the stunning waterfalls.
We spent 3 days at the Iguazu falls. Our hotel was the perfect base to explore. Iguazu Falls, from both the Argentina side and the Brazil side.
We saw the Iguazu Falls, viewed from all anglesDuring our stay. We saw the Iguazu Falls on the upper and lower paths while hiking in the park. We went out along boardwalk in Argentina for a view down the thundering Devil’s Throat. On another day we hiked on the Brazil side for another close-up experience of the Devil’s Throat.
A boat tour beneath the falls gave us a wet view. We were able to see the mighty waterfalls from above on a helicopter ride.
When we planned our South America trips on a voyage to Antarctica, we were so happy we could include Iguazu Fall.
Enjoying South America’s Treats
We added South America to our Antarctica cruise because of the many local treats. The food was always a major draw. Argentina was famous for its churrascarias and the quality of its beef. When we wanted something sweet, dulce de leche could be found everywhere.
We love to visit wineries and discover new wines on our travels. We did a lot of things on our first trip to South America. Visits to Chilean wineriesI discovered some new favorite varietals. We missed the opportunity to visit Mendoza’s wineries when we were in Buenos Aires.
Local history and culture were always great reasons to travel. As part of the tour, we got to see tango dancers. A traditional horseshow in Chile. And we’re happy we learned so much about tango at the Rojo Tango Show in Buenos Aires.
Travelling around Chile Enchanted Valley is a beautiful place to visit (or “Valle del Encanto”National Historic Monument. We learned a lot from the petroglyphs.
Every time we visited South America, we discovered new delights.
